Zoetropes Down

The zoetropes are succumbing to the street. This one looks like it was bitten. As delicate and obrusive into normal human space as it is, I’m surprised how much of it has survived. That is, it’s at a level on the pole that could annoy someone wanting to lean on or get around the pole. Most long-lived hitchhikers perch high on their poles and are made to be just about bulletproof. Stanton Street.

Orchard Street

Zoetrope placed high on a parking pole. That might let it survive longer than the others that are at kid height. It’s on the newly cafe ridden Orchard Street. Most of the old-time merchants (what Orchard Street is famous for) are gone between Houston and Stanton streets.

Zoetrope Conflux

Another Zoetrope. Ludlow Street near Rivington, within line-of-site of Participant Inc where Psygeoconflux is centered. I’m guessing they are jams of some sort, that is, they were put together by a group of artists. The painting on the two pieces are obviously different styles.

I suspect the sheet metal with the viewing slits is of some standard manufacture for construction use. I know from my experience in making stuff out of found objects, getting a burr free edge on cut sheet metal is not easy.

The conflux at the noon start-up. They have a lot of interactive/participatory art, and are serving coffee. The opening reception is at 7 tonight. 95 Rivington Street. Looks like fun.

Street Zoetrope

Zoetrope bolted to traffic sign pole, Norfolk and Stanton Street.

I think it’s a baby carriage wheel. Those red plastic things rattle nicely when the wheel is spun. I didn’t grasp that it was a zoetrope until I looked at the photos. See how the flower waves back and forth. You need to peer through the slits to see the animation. I’ll try to get some video of this before someone takes it away or destroys it. I suspect it was put up to coincide with Psygeoconflux May 13 – 16 – Highlights – Interview with Dave Mandl in the Gothamist.
