Unsilent Night 2002 meets Santacon. I took my aging VHS camera to Phil Kline's great annual musical event, Unsilent Night. Phil Kline's piece, uses masses of the public marching with boomboxes playing specially made tapes of his ethereal ambient music. This year Santacon (a bunch of Burning Man types in santa costumes, shouting HO, HO, HO, and bar-hopping to oblivion) added a layer of anarchy to the mix. It was a great New York moment. Though the resolution that my VHS-C camcorder gives me in low light situations leaves much to be desired, I find merit in being able to choose just the right instant to display. I'm sure I would not have gotten all the candid expressions captured here with a still camera. And I've always been pleased with the audio recording on this JVC Videomovie GR-AX300U, soon to be celebrating it's tenth birthday. But a better camera is on my wish list. John
