Heading up Sixth Avenue. I'm basing this on the glimpse of the Empire State Building in the upper right of the photo. I'm shooting this holding it over my head while riding. Most of the others I tried like this came out too blurry to use, but the technique is worth it, if only for the spontaneity.

Somewhere in midtown. Our route twisted around the area so much that it's not easy for me to retrace.

Bike-salute, somewhere near Times Square. After this we snaked over to the entrance to the upper level of the Queensboro Bridge. We had the whole outbound side to ourselves. It was too dark by then to take any photos, but the view of the city from the top was great.

The Hungry March Band at the after party at the Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens. I was able to hear them a good block before we got to the garden. They were tight, and spirited.

It was too dark to see any of the sculptures. Though it was fairly easy to avoid walking into these pedestal mounted lawn ornaments (gnomes etc.). It was nice to be able to get near the water of the East River with the nearest street light hundreds of yards away. I came back to Manhattan via first the Pulaski Bridge to Greenpoint. I tagged along with a small group of riders heading to Williamsburg, led by a remarkable cyclist able to read a map and steer her bike hands free. I split off and headed for the Williamsburg Bridge's recently improved bike and pedestrian path. They've been working on it longer than it took to raise the Empire State Building, yet the southern bike path still isn't done. But the northern path led me nicely back to my Lower East Side neighborhood. |
